The medieval period in England lasted for nearly a thousand years, starting from the end of the 5th century and ending around the start of the Early Modern Period in 1485. The rise of Anglo-Saxons and Christianity, and then the Norman Invasion and finally famine, disease and war provided a rich tapestry of patronage and subject matter for artists of all media. Our program explores this broad milieu from the monophonic plainchant of the early Middle Ages through polyphony influenced by the Ars Nova, and Contenance Angloise, including works found in the Old Hall Manuscript.
